18th Century candle box

In the 18th Century, the candle box was used for storing candles.

18th Century tilt-top (elliptical) candlestand

This 18th Century tilt-top candlestand has an elliptical top.  In order to save space, the candlestand's top could be tilted and and the entire piece moved against the wall. 

18th Century campaign chair

The hallmark of British campaign furniture was portability; therefore, the furniture taken on a war campaign either folded flat or broke down.  With 14 hinges, this chair folds flat.

18th Century tape loom

In the 18th Century, this type of loom was used to weave narrow bands of cloth - called "tapes."  Tapes were used for straps, trim, ties, etc.

One of my tape looms and the plans for building it were featured in the 2009 Christmas issue of Early American Life, which was on news stands until Jan. 1, 2010. You can go to the Early American Life website and purchase the magazine as a back issue. Make sure you order the Christmas 2009 issue; not the December 2009 issue. (They are two separate issues.)
