One Day

The design is no where near my current 20 x 20 garage setting, so one day I hope to make it a reality. I love natural light and often opt for under bench storage solutions which would allow for a...

Kane Tsugi End Table

I was commissioned to produce a set of end tables for a client and given free reign to do so. This is what I came up with. I had seen the Kane Tsugi on a few different occasions in the past several...

Amy's Box

This is a jewelry/keepsake box that I made for my new sister in-law. The top is produced out of solid pieces of Quilted Maple, Honduran Mahogany and Wenge. It's been beveled to lighten the edges and...

Re: UPDATE: DVD Giveaway: Fine Woodworking 2011 Annual Collection

Yes please...

Re: Fine Woodworking on the David Letterman Show

Very very cool...just forwarded it to everyone I know.

Re: UPDDATE: Shop Improvements: Outstanding ideas from the world's finest woodworkers from Fine Woodworking magazine

What a coincidence. I'm actually building a new lumber rack to help organize my shop today. Great timing FWW, would love to see everything thats in store in the book.

Re: How to make a bandsaw in a pinch

I've seen this done in a few places while out on job sites. Necessity is the mother of all invention. Way to think outside of the box to solve your problem at hand.

Re: UPDATED: What Tools Are on Your Holiday Wish List?

I'm hoping for a few Matsumura chisels this Christmas. Enough hard maple for a new work bench would be fine too.

Re: Tallboy

What an interesting piece. Love the design and the overall flow of the piece. The drawer fronts look a little bit out of place, not really matching any other aspects of the piece. Still, nicely done and you nailed the flow with your arched legs and stretcher.

Re: Chest Table inspired by Greene & Greene

Very nice piece that has held true to the G&G style. I like that it still carries some bulk but is still fairly light in overall structure. Nicely done.

Re: walnut table with red date palm and walnut top

What a great sleeper piece. Nothing that jumps right out at you but still draws you in with it's soft curves. It makes me want to touch it...a corner stone of Maloof's style. Nicely accomplished.

Re: jewelry chest

Nice piece. Wood selections are very complimentary of each other allowing the piece to speak for itself rather than being overwhelmed with too much grain structure and coloring. Nicely done.

Re: Ambrosia and Walnut Hall Table

Nicely done. Your lines are crisp and balanced allowing for a clean piece that is light and airy. Not bad for your second furniture piece. Glad to see that you didn't get weighted down in heavy grain figuring as many guys seem to do.

Re: Dovetailed drawers are overrated

Are dovetails overrated? It depends...I recently walked through a new spec home in my area that had an extra 3K on the price tag because the drawers throughout the kitchen and bathrooms were dovetailed. Nice feature right? Well upon closer inspection the drawers were nothing special, just melamine veneer over MDF. I'm certain that in a few months/years those joints are going to fail simply because of the materials used.

The joint has its time and its place. Just because there are a million and one templates, gadgets and devices on the market to enable the quick production of machined dovetail doesn't mean they should be used on every product coming out of the shop. So many guys out there slap a dovetail into a piece thinking it's the key that is going to make their piece extraordinary, when in reality is distracts from the overall composition of the piece.

Re: Amy's Box

Thanks,

The dividers are all pre-fit to the application first to ensure a snug fit. I'll then remove everything for finishing and upholstery.

The liner is an upholstered technique that I've adapted from Bill McDowell's boxes. I'll upholster either a piece of thin ply or heavy art board depending on the size and application and secure that to the box, tray or lid first using contact adhesive spray. I'll then re-insert the dividers and give each joint of the divider a light dab of CA glue.
