I can only imagine the nasty injury but running any power tool has an inherant risk of injury. My saw does not have flesh detection however if it did I would treat it with the same respect and follow all safety precautions. Based on the merits of information provided in this case it sounds as though the award was in part a sympathitic jesture. Folks, we all pay for this when we go shoping or buy insurance. The only thing that will stop this is tort reform.
