Re: James Krenov: 1920 - 2009

JK's books were an inspiration for me, and a call to improve the quality of my work. I was lucky enough to sit down with JK in his home, have a beer, and chat about things a number of years ago.

I know that he had a difficult personality for lot's of people, but he was always nice to me, and willing to share, as many woodworkers do.

As we have read in his books, he was thinking about how much time he had left when he wrote those books. Luckily for us, it was a long time. Thanks JK for your contributions to excellence not only in your work, but in your writing as well. We will miss you.

Re: Who Begot Who? Comparing Planes from Lie-Nielsen, Wood River and Stanley

I feel very sad every time I see Woodcraft knock off a small manufacturer. I believe Tite-Mark was the first victim, and now this WR stuff. Looking at the castings, it is clear that the knock-off is based solely on the LN plane. As a customer of Woodcraft, I think it is time for us to just say no to these tools. And this is not the same as buying a Japanese vs. American car. Those vehicles are differentiated and they are large companies that can protect their innovations. LN, although expensive, have provided a product that was no longer available from the original manufacture. You all can rationalize all you want about not affording LN and justifying buying the knock-off. But I know, deep-down, you know who's business you are hurting, and why.

By the way, I spent 20 years in the Fortune 500 and have a business degree, so don't give me the tired, "service to shareholder argument." When I started, public corporations had ethical practices, not like today.
