What should be the first rule of glue ups has not been posted: apply the glue to the surfaces carefully. Too much, too little, and in the wrong places causes the problems.

A simpler drill press shelf can be made by supporting the shelf with one of those inexpensive stamped "L" shelf brackets. The channel stamped into each arm for added rigidity helps center it on post. Use wood screws to attach one arm to the bottom of the shelf and then clamp the verticle arm to the column of the drill press with one or two a hose clamps. Done. No need to cut out shelf or use a mounting collar.
