make music for a living. have a long history with sawdust. my grandfather ran a sawmill in my native maine. built a camp on a lake and a couple of boats with my dad as a boy. i have very fond memories of watching him solve just about any problem he encountered with a chest full of hand tools. while i am collecting, one by one, the basic machines i'll need to do really good work, i am also trying to find the odd vintage hand tool that will complete my collection. i'm looking forward to the day my recording studio becomes a workshop.

count me in for the drawing.

Re: Some times it seems so small but I get things done

bob,

i've just divided my garage in half, so my new (first) shop is basically 19 X 9 feet. i can barely get a 4X8 sheet through the door. But i stand in there and look around and "grateful" is the only word. i just love the smell of the place. i'm now into my first project and i wake up every morning thinking of what i might be able to get done today. i'm not retired yet, so the "day job" continues to demand time. i'm still mostly building jigs to help with yet-to-be-determined projects. but even that process is filled with a wonderful anticipation.

thanks for sharing your shop with us.

Re: UPDATE: Building Small Cabinets by Doug Stowe

i've really admired doug's box making videos. i'm sure his small cabinets are equally beautiful.

Re: UPDATED: What Tools Are on Your Holiday Wish List?

i need some higher quality marking tools. i'm building my own kitchen cabinets. it's my first serious woodworking project. things are going really well. everything's square and solid. but i'm finding that the more i do this, the more i need to get away from a pencil and into something even more exact and exacting. man, i love making sawdust!!

PS i totally agree with the guys who'd like some beautiful wood. sometimes when i'm seaching through a selection of various hardwoods i'll come across one piece that'll stop me in my tracks. there's nothing like it.
