Re: iPad and Woodworking?

Will I buy an iPad? I most likely will. It looks like a great piece of technology but will the iPad end up in my shop, very unlikely. I can already view FWW and other content in the shop and on a much larger 26" screen. I view the iPad as a mobile device to be used when a full sized computer is either unnecessary or inconvenient. The iPad will work for many people and will not work for many more but either way, it will have an impact on future technology. I would hope that FWW would be ready for what ever comes.

I am always amused by the people that will NEVER use or ONLY use a Mac computer. My first PC was an Apple computer. I purchased an Apple computer before you could even buy a so called "PC". Later, when IBM came out with the first "PC", I purchased one and made room next to my Apple computer. I now have a Mac next to my Windows computer and use both every day. Each has its pros and cons but neither has even the even the slightest impact on how I access this website or view FWW content.

Re: UPDATED: Giveaway and Poll: The Most Requested Woodworking Gifts of 2009

Although I enjoy cutting dovetails by hand, the Leigh dovetail jig looks pretty nice. I am also intrigued by the Oneida Dust Deputy and I really like the L-N brass cross peen hammer.

Re: Poll: What hand tools are on your holiday wish list?

I received one of the items on my Christmas wish list, a beautiful Lie-Nielsen dovetail saw. Items that remain on my list are a Veritas or Lie-Nielsen medium shoulder plane, a Lie-Nielsen #7 jointer and/or low angle jack plane. A DMT 10 inch 220/325 Grit Diamond Stone would be welcome as would Rockler bench cookies. As always clamps, clamps and more CLAMPS. Clamps of any size and any style as long as they are of good quality.

Re: UPDATE: Book Giveaway: New Masters of the Wooden Box by Oscar P. Fitzgerald

New Masters of the Wooden Box looks like a great book. A number of the boxes inside look very interesting.

Re: Who Begot Who? Comparing Planes from Lie-Nielsen, Wood River and Stanley

Just to add another point of view. My brother in law looks at me and my prized Bed Rock planes and all of their copies with pity and sadness. He makes his own exquisitely crafted wooden planes and collects/uses Hotley, Norris and others that have no resemblance to anything made by Stanley, Lie-Neilsen or Wood River. He often tells me to "put down my toys and see what you can accomplish with a real plane". All of my Lie-Neilsen planes together wouldn't buy even one of his Hotley planes.

Re: Who Begot Who? Comparing Planes from Lie-Nielsen, Wood River and Stanley

I am curious as to what Fine Woodworking would have to say if Stanley was to reintroduce the Bedrock line of planes and decided to incorporate some of the Lie-Neilsen improvements?

I buy the best that I can afford and own Lie-Nielsen, original Stanley Bailey and Bed Rock and a few Veritas and Preston. There is no doubt as to the quality of a LN plane and the company is a pleasure to deal with, but my prized planes are lovingly restored Bed Rocks. Although I do not own any of the Wood River planes, when I started out I probably would have purchased them if they were all that I could afford. You can get alot more use out of the plane that you can afford but requires a thorough tune up than a picture of a plane that is pinned on your workshop wall and is being saved up for.
