Yes it's 3in. end grain cherry butchers block. I forgot to mention that. The rest of the pieces will have a dark soapstone for a top.

Thanks for the comment. Good question I stuggled with this for a few days, the solution I came up with was to line the inside of the casket with 1/2" birtch plywood and attach it with screws to the stiles and rails only. The handles then were installed by using T-nuts on the inside and through bolted. By screwing the plwwood to the stiles and rails and installing the handles in the center of the panel the load is transfered to the entire case and the panels can float as intended.
