Additionally, I have been designing furniture for over 35 years, but only in the last 20 have I been able to build the stuff I have designed, as opposed to having someone else do the work.
Currently I'm designing and building "Gallery Quality" jewelry boxes utilizing tropical wood and metal and gemstone inserts.

Spalted maple for Lid, Macassar Ebony for Base/secret drawer, Mexican Rosewood for body and top handles. This is my first box and I hope to get to the level of being able to build my own designs.

Re: How Does a Fine Woodworker Change a Lightbulb?
I used to work with a guy who would tell others "not to ask me the time, 'cause I'd tell them how to make a watch."
posted: 7:46 pm on April 4thSomehow this video brings that statement back to me.
Re: UPDATE: The Foundations of Better Woodworking by Jeff Miller
I've been a woodworker for almost 40 years and this is one of those times when I can say "I really feel I can learn things from a book." Not to say that there were other books that helped me along the path of destroying too much wood, as we are never too old too old to learn.

Many thanks, I hope I win.

Re: Rikon Rolls Out New Contractor Saw
I'm an owner of Rikon's 14" Deluxe (very early model)and find it to be excellent. The only exception is the instruction manual, which leaves a lot to be desired.
posted: 8:04 am on June 23rdDoes this new table saw have the same quality and preciseness as my early band saw.
Also, is there a reason (other than poor sales) why Rikon discontinued the two earlier pricier model Table Saws?
Re: Router Injury Sparks Reflection on Safety
Never having an accident in almost 40 years I had two in the period of one week.
posted: 6:39 pm on May 27thBoth were due to being over confident, careless and a departure of the rule "that if you think a procedure is a bad idea, it probably is and DON'T DO IT"
Luckily, neither were too serious. In fact only one required a trip to a critical care facility as I couldn't stop the bleeding from the kickback my thumb took. As sutures wouldn't work on this type of injury, they had to use some sort of glue strips to it it to stop.
It still feels as if there's still some wood in my thumb and I'll eventually get it looked at.
These were both from a table saw.
Re: Poll: Are You A Pro Woodworker?
I've been making "gallery grade" jewelry boxes for a few years now, though I've been into woodworking and design for over 40 years.
posted: 5:49 pm on October 1stAs I'm a graphic designer by trade, I'm now only working on a long term contract basis and it only amounts to 3 days a week so I now have more time to "ruin good wood".
I'd really like to start selling, maybe on a contract basis only, my boxes. The problem is that I still consider woodworking a hobby and only work when I feel like it. This amounts to a lot of hours to complete one box along with a lot of time spent "hands on".
To profit from this transition, I'd either have to work a lot faster ("don't want to get into a cookie cutter mode") or command a price way too high to be marketable to a wider buying public. The other alternative, pricing my work more reasonably, I'd clear about $2.00 pr hr. and for that low amount, I'd rather give the work away.
Any really helpful hints would be appreciated.

Re: UPDATE: Book Giveaway: Made By Hand by Tom Fidgen
Just what I want for Valentine's Day. I've been lusting after this since I first saw it advertised. Hopefully you guys will pick me. And I can then spend the money on some of CD's you have on sale.
posted: 9:33 pm on January 31stI was at the live tenon shoot out and even though it took 2x as long to cut them by hand, my wife and neighbors are really getting on my case about the table saw noise, considering I sometimes work at 11:00 pm
