Re: UPDATE: Turning Wood with Richard Raffan, 3rd edition

He's given some really great demonstrations! It would be a treat to sit down and savor his writings in his book.

Re: UPDATE: Carving in the Round by Andrew Thomas and How to Carve Wood by Richard Butz

I found a carving group here in town but found no instruction as to how to begin. Hopefully, a book can give me a good start. I have learned that a collection of 30 year-old wood is too hard to carve. I guess I need to start with green wood.

Re: UPDATE: Rough Cut - Woodworking with Tommy Mac by Tommy MacDonald and Laurie Donnelly

We love his show but we have to view it on the Create channel. For some odd reason, our local PBS station only has Create from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM which meant staying up until 11:00 PM. We finally learned to program the DVD recorder so we'll be ready when (and if) it returns to Create. Our local PBS regular channel doesn't seem to like woodworking shows. Thank goodness Fine Woodworking has short videos we can watch.

Re: Broken power tool: Junk it or fix it?

It depends on the repair cost. I just rebuilt a 60-year old cast iron jigsaw instead of getting a new scroll saw. I guess it involved being sentimental rather than using common sense. I do enjoy working on my old tools rather than replacing them if possible. If I have to buy another battery operated drill, I will get a Rigid that guarantees the drill and battery for life.
