Re: UPDATE: Book Giveaway: Tree Craft by Chris Lubkemann

Well, thanks again Fine Woodworking first for the opportunity to win this book, and secondly for actually winning it!

When first informed, my impression was this book would provide 35 unique projects - and thats it. Well I was pleasently surprised there was more in this book.

First, it starts with "Getting Started". The author takes you through the different woods, their properties, how to find the wood and preparing the bark before you start your projects. Never really put much thought into that aspect of the project.

There is also a section on "Sharpening" - keeping your knife (or carving tools) sharp - very nice touch!

The remainder of the book breaks the 35 projects into 5 diffeerent categories: Decorating, Dining, Living, Playing and Working.

Overall I am pleased with the book, and look forward to making some of the projects for family and friends!

Thanks again!!

Property butts up against metro parks - tons of downed trees to get material from - "WOOD" love this book!!! Sign me up!

Thanks!

Re: Brian Havens

Outstanding presentation Brian! Nice use of Sketchup too. What slideshow software did you use.

I also utilize Sketchup and use Proshow Producer software for slideshows - now you got me inspired! LOL! Already starting my workshop tour - hope you are not offended that I will take your approach - never really thought about incorporating both pieces of software like that!

Again very VERY nice presentation - oh and a GREAT SHOP TOO!!

Count me in, and THANK YOU for the opportunity!

Re: "Components" in SketchUp

I agree - speaking of exploded views - other than manually performing the actions, is there an easy way to create an exploded view when creating a project. I designed a Wood Slat Bench in Sketchup (using only GROUPS - grr - wish I had this discussion with you about 2 weeks ago - lol! Had to manually resize like 20 slats - each individually! HA HA - now they are components - after the fact)

Anyway - I manually pulled each group apart to create the exploded view - they used the Dimension tool to get piece sizes. Came out pretty well - but a real PIA!

Thanks again!

Bob

Congrats tipmap!

Re: "Components" in SketchUp

Thanks Dave! Yes I have a mych better understanding now - almost appears to be no real need for the groups then - only in instances where you have a unique, one-time item you draw!

I appreciate your time in responding - keep up the great work.

I am new to this forum and must say I am quite impressed!

Bob

Re: "Components" in SketchUp

While I am by no means an expert, I feel pretty comfortable with Sketchup. However I am still confused as to the difference between GROUPS and COMPONENTS. Other than the fact that with COMPONENET, if you make a change it will be made to all similar components - are there any other differences/advantages betweek GROUPS and COMPONENTS?

Thanks!

Bob

Include me in the book giveaway!

I have only made one cane in my woodworking life - and it was turned on a lathe from a branch my sister-in-law was having cut down. In the shaft of the cane I turned the profiles of her son, daughter-in-law and their twin daughters. It has a brass handle, and is in two parts that wcrew together. It came out quite well - so much so that she refuses to use it and simply has it on display - LOL

Wood (he he) love to make her one she would actually use.
