The one thing that draws me to wood working is every project when finished is a “One Of A Kind” piece of art. Its rare to own your own original “Mona Lisa”, but you can with wood working. Each piece of wood is unique and they all have their own hidden secret treasures waiting to be unleashed.

I have been a wood worker since I was just a kid. On a trip (November ‘04) to a local pawn shop I found an older model Jet Mini lathe. It was missing the tail stock, but I was able to pick it up for $25. It had a small face plate and I had a set of Delta turning tools.

I began turning pieces of wood I had stored in my garage from other projects. When I go to Missouri to visit my parents I usually stop at a local saw mill (great prices) to pick up a load of lumber. Initially most of my work was with walnut, sassafras, oak and cherry. In addition I was lucky to find a local saw mill that has cedar and mesquite at a decent price.

With my first lathe I made most of our Christmas presents and realized that people really liked my work. I quickly outgrew my bargain lathe and upgraded to a inexpensive new lathe from Grizzly. If you are into wood working you will probably not consider this a great lathe. But so far I think it has been a great decision.
