This looks good, thanks for posting. This is one of the few examples of built in shelves where the walls on the side of the fireplace are not recessed. This is the same issue I have and I am looking to build similar shelves.

Did you finish it with anything else besides Spar Varnish?

I'm currently working on a cedar planter box and was thinking of useing this same finish.
