Regarding the safety of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in filling wood, polyethylene glycol is is not ethylene glycol (antifreeze stuff), and is non-toxic. It is used medically as a laxative, and if you have had a colonoscopy, you have probably drunken it in the "prep". If softening at 100 degrees or so is undesirable in your application, you could try a higher molecular weight.
