Re: Maple & Wenge Jewelry Box
Beautiful. Very organic in appearance.

Once again I am dismayed that a jury of people who could find the courtroom more than one day in a row were not smart enough to see a get rich lawsuit for the plaintiff when they saw one. The cost of this decision to all consumers will be felt without many realizing the actual cause. My faith in humanity wanes.

Doug, I just stumbled on to this thread. I am a big fan of exaggerated joinery and I think LEG hit the nail on the head. The harmonious gathering of details, wedged through tenons, multiple elevations and wood types, all come together to give a visual sense of a simple balance. In execution the "simple" part is deceiving but the result is just great. Thanks for sharing these.

Wow, I knew this would prompt a lot of passionate responses but this is more than even I expected. Folks who run a RAS do not ever seem to be wishy washy about it and I think their enthusiasm is great.
posted: 12:44 pm on July 13thThe RAS takes up too much room to carry its weight in my shop but that is based on the type of pieces I make, not the value of the tool. I haven't run my CMS in almost 2 years either. Glad I have it and it folds up into a very small footprint, awaiting my occasional use, stand and all.
Re: Play Fine Woodworking's Game: Against the Grain
These were a no-brainer. If all of these were not instantly obvious to you, stop and reflect on your interpretation of table saw safety. Hope we all got a perfect score.

The fact that this even got to court is disturbing. The fact that a jury would make an award to the plaintiff is disturbing. I guess if I take the brakes off of my car and I hit something, the car maker owes me a couple of million dollars. Its OK, they can just take it out of their emloyee retirement program.
posted: 3:04 pm on May 5thDon't get me wrong; the guy should get his medical taken care of just like anyone with an on the job injury. However, no matter how much he is awarded, you can't buy good sense. If this award is the start of a pattern, then the problem will become self curing; we won't be able to afford the tools to be foolish with in the first place.
Re: Display Cabinet / Clever Door
Beautiful solution. I would love to know more about the hinges.

Mike, that chest is a thing of beauty. I have done very little carving but, enough to know the care involved in this. Quite striking. Congrats on a very appealing design and wonderful execution.

I have a metal bucket with a tight fitting lid. About $15 at most hardware stores. When I work with products that have this property, I put 2" of water in the bottom of the bucket and toss my rags in there as I work, keeping it covered.
posted: 5:25 pm on September 1stOnce I am done I remove the rags and hang them on a line away from any combustibles and leave them to dry. Once they are completely dry (its easy to tell, they're stiff and don't smell anymore) they go into the regular trash as recommended by our local waste disposal folks. Check with your local disposal outfit as rules vary.
Re: Easy-to-install spiral cutterheads for $250
I'd rather spend a bit more and get the greater number of cutters on the "other" heads. It makes no sense to me to go "almost" there for most of the cost if you are after that type of cutter. I love mine BTW ;-)

Gary has got a winner. I thought I was looking at a high end kitchen or someone's study. Talk about a place for everything and everything in it's place.

Very nice work. I like that you added a bit of the carving that appears in a few G&G pieces during that period.
