Re: Ideas for Woodworking's Own Reality TV
Silently observe professionals and amateurs in their shops doing a project start to finish, over several episodes (Don't go too fast!). Then critique shop layout, tools, and methods. Then redesign the shop on the cheap and show better methods or adopt their methods and tool and jigs.

Custom furniture is art, and artists are almost never well paid. It isn't just "the public" that has a hard time distinguishing between custom and factory made, it's craftsmen too. Well crafted isn't good enough, it must be well designed, as in strong, functional, and beautiful. The market for overdone and avant-garde has always been and always will be small. It must be easily moved from room to room, place to place, take abuse and still look great.

Many have skills, very few have style. It's a treasure.

Thanks for the info on the adjustable bench. Now I want it more.

This is one of the few shops I've seen that looks prepared for serious work. Tell me about the roll around scissor type adjustable bench. Who makes it? Where can I buy one? I have a small shop with one medium workbench/table and one small, short workbench/table. An ajustable one like that would make the perfect second table.

I am a hobbiest who's goal is to replace my furniture with furniture I couldn't possibly afford, so far so good. As I get better, I visit local woodworking shops and go on line and am disappointed. These huge shops tend to be so poorly laid out that given the choice, I'd rather work in my one stall garage shop. At work and home my rule is: setup has priorty over the job. Whenever a person thinks of a better way or is irritated by something, they must stop and redesign. People who work through the problem, planning to fix it when they finish, never do.

Great engineering, so simple it seems obvious. I could have used one several times. Thanks.

I want one. The built-in mantle in my place looked good until I saw yours. Now it has to go. You've ruined me. Thanks.

You need to design more furniture. Wow! You've pulled off the impossible. You've done the whole piece in highly figured wood without making it garish. Thank you for opening my eyes.

Makes me want to make a door. I agree with the first two comments, simple and beautiful.

Great engineering. Finally a scrap bin that's better than a 5 gallon bucket. It's cheap, adaptable, and easy to build. You should submit it to Fine Woodworking "Methods of Work."

I consider most furniture I see in the galleries as overworked and souless pieces from outstanding craftsmen. You're not just a craftman, you're an artist. It inspires me. Its the finest piece of furniture I've ever seen. Thank you.

While nice, the contrast between the dark and light wood and grain is garish. A dark dye would have bridged the gap and tied them together. Then it would belong in the bathroom as a medicine chest.
