I have been around woodworking since I was a child, watching my dad build cabinets in our garage with the simplest of tools. That started a life long journey evolving my skills as a self-taught woodworker, building bars and stereo cabinets in college to ultimately running a woodworking company. After building my first marquetry piece, I had an “aha” moment and focused my attention on veneer work. I currently run Divine Design, a decorative veneering company. I teach "Sketchup Primer" and "Furniture Design with Sketchup and Photoshop" at Marc Adams School of Woodworking during the fall.

"In Neidermeier of Repair"

This biedermeier inspired table has a bit of problem. It seems the basket weave pattern is in desparate need of repair. The composition uses a story telling technique of character (the owner writing...

"Broken Hearted"

Sometimes you get the right card, sometimes you don't.   This rococo styled table features a gaming storyline. A 10 of hearts would have made for a nice hand. But instead all we have is an...

"Time" for the holidays

Just a bunch of marquetry clocks with varying degrees of complexity.

Reflecting back on 2009

Inlayed Mirrors.

Woodman

Woodman, purveyor of curved shapes and defender of abstract ideas. Inspired in part from Dale Lewis (design book 6?), this was my first and only attempt at wood shaping.

Where's Waldo of Wood

Imagine you are doing a complex glue up and you place your clamps in just the right spot for the perfect assembly. You post signs to leave everything alone so the glue can set. You come in the next...

Louis XIV Boulle' Collectors Cabinet

This is a collectors cabinet popular in Europe during the late 1600's (Louis XIV). Many different techniques such as mold making, Boulle marquetry, and composition ornament were used.

Louis XV Breakfront Buffet

French Louis XV Breakfont buffets were very popular during the 1700's. As the name implies, the middle section is extended outwards. This project is my all time favorite as it combines period styling...

The project after the Tool Chest

After building the tool chest, I didn't get the sense of fulfillment I imagined incorporating the usual woodworking techniques like joinery. But I did enjoy all the decorative work. The next leg of...

Lonnie Bird Inspired Toolchest

This is a cabinet was inspired from a feature article and video clip in FWW about a secretary that Lonnie Bird built. This furniture style doesn't match the rest of my house, so I decided to make it...

Drama on the Table Top

I teach a concept called storylining and is very effective at transforming furniture into functional art. It involves creating a composition using basic storytelling techniques of character...

Ole Boulle

Poor Man's Ruhlmann Cabinet on Stand

Why is it called "Poor Man's Ruhlmann"? I used recomposed ebony versus the real thing ($2 sf vs $14), PVC instead of ivory, Mother of Pearl sheets instead of solid pearl, and poplar legs.

Ruhlmann Art Deco Sofa Table

Ruhlmann Art Deco Sofa Table made with ebony, brazilian rosewood, PVC for ivory, and aluminum.

Re: Griffin Table

There are very, very few people in this country who posses the hand skills in both marquetry AND carving that Dennis does. Hopefully we can get the Griffin table into the final selection and get Dennis a well deserved hvlp sprayer.

Re: Federal Sideboard

Veeeery Nice. Nothing simple in your latest posts. Keep it up.

Re: Reflecting back on 2009

For the third picture with the cherib and ribbon, I used muric acid to remove the silver mirror backing, then I made a separate veneered backer board that aligned with the clear glass area. Working with acid is not much fun. Half of the people who see it think the veneer is glued on top of the mirror.

Re: Corner Jewelry Cabinet

Very nice! This is perfect example of contemporary furniture design; curves, powerful veneers, and clean detailing. Congrats. And super photography. I take this over mission style any day. Post more.

Re: Ole Boulle

Not sure of the question, but for a table saw I now use my new sawstop. For marquetry work, when I use to do it manually, I used my Ryobi scroll saw with a 2/0 skip tooth blade with the table angled to 15 degrees when using commercial veneers (.025").

Re: Mahogany Spice Box with String and Berry Inlay

Great job again. Nice photos.

Re: Chess Table

Nice work and great job on the photography! Luvin' the lighting.

Re: Full Dress Aaron Burr Desk

Barry, you certainly pushed the limit on this one. I think this is one of your best. Lovin' the arrow top design. Nice out of the box thinking. I love that chair/table form. It reminds me of a telephone sitting area my grandpa had.

Re: Ole Boulle

Hi Dennis.
Yes it is. Wood makes my nose look smaller, or at least that's what I am told.

Great job on you pieces as usual.

Re: Ole Boulle

Good guess.

Actually, it was laminated with a water based casting compound called Aquaresin, which had a base form of insulation pink foam skinned with clay.
