Re: Death at Yale University a Sad Reminder for Shop Safety Vigilance

I doubt a dead man switch would have prevented this. If you think about how fast a spinning chuck moves, an 18" length of hair would represent less than 10 revolutions of the chuck. 10 revolutions at a speed of, say 300 RPM's, represents less than a second of reaction time, not to mention the coast down time after you hit the button. You wouldn't have a chance to react.

Re: My Garage Workshop

I like all the work surfaces you have around the table and radial saws. I agree with kbagan, some more lighting will help you. I installed 2 8 foot flo. fixtures with the high output ballasts and also painted all the walls and ceiling with high gloss white paint and it made a huge difference. Painting the floor with gray epoxy also helped immensely with light.

Your pictures are inspiring me to do more with converting my garage into a fully dedicated woodshop. I'm having a hard time giving up the ability to pull the car in the garage. Its the biggest struggle Im having. I like having the ability to work on the car in cold weather but then it interferes with having a dedicated wood shop. arrggggg. any one else struggling with this also?
