I am Dan Phillips. I am a furniture maker living and working in Dallas Texas. I have always been an admirer of wood and objects made of wood. My father is a talented architect, carpenter, and artist. The house I grew up in was designed and built by him and was quite an amazing display of his ability. The house featured lots of woodwork - floors, ceiling, beams, stairs, doors - all made by him. My mother is also a wonderful and inspiring artist. She paints and draws as well as charcoal and collage. My brother and I were always encouraged to develop our creative endeavors.
I started working seriously as a carpenter with my father after high school. We did lots of framing and finish work. I found that I was most attracted to the cabinet work and being in the shop rather than on site. After some time I got a job working for Urban Outfitters doing visual work and fixture making. During this period a good friend told me about the North Bennet Street School. I took a two week course there called fundamentals of fine woodworking. We learned sharpening techniques and how to cut a few joints by hand. At this point it was clear to me that this sort of fine and detailed work was exactly how I wanted to spend my time. I enrolled in the two year program for furniture making. After graduating I returned to Dallas and set up a proper furniture making shop with my father.
