Benji Reyes wears many hats as sculptor, cabinet maker, furniture designer, and design consultant. He studied architecture at the University of Santo Tomas (1977-80) and fine arts at the University of the Philippines (1980-3). Upon graduation, Benji embarked on a vocation as a wood artist, creating individualist furniture exclusively using recycled Philippine hardwoods. Apprenticing with master cabinetmakers, he perfected a handcrafted method of bending, shaping, and fitting recycled wood into fluid-lined "functional sculptures," exquisite pieces of art that would be passed on as heirlooms. After twelve years of signature chair-making, he built his own three-pavilion wooden house in Antipolo. Since 1991, he has held thirteen solo exhibitions of Benji Reyes furniture.
