One very simple thing that can save you a trip to the emergency ward. Never, I mean never reach past the blade for any reason. If your fingers are always in front of the blade then they can't be dragged through it from a kick back. I had to learn this the hard way. Luckily I got away with only a few stitches.

Nice straight grain on the Redwood.
Hows was it to work with? I find Red Cedar can be soft and splintery.
