Online Exclusive: Miller's Reproduction Plane There's nothing plain about this plane by Tom Begnal For more than 20 years, Paul Hamler has crafted limited-edition reproductions of miniature antique tools. But for his latest project, he went full-size to create a remarkable investment-cast silicon-bronze reproduction of a classic plow plane patented in 1882 by Charles G. Miller. The Miller plane is considered to be one of the rarest ever made. It's also a wonderful example of the excessively ornate designs that flourished during the Victorian period. ![]() Although Hamler expects to sell this one mostly to collectors, it comes with a functioning 1/4-in. wide blade. And once sharpened, it made a nice rabbeting cut in red oak. A set of seven more cutters, from 1/8 in. to 5/8 in. wide, is expected to be available next year. According to Hamler, anyone looking to buy an original Miller's Patent plane in good condition should plan to spend about $25,000. Hamler's reproduction plane, limited to a run of 500, sells for $800. For more information, contact Hamler Tools at 770-972-2727. Tom Begnal is an associate editor of Fine Woodworking.
