Valentine's Day Jewelry Box
comments (3) February 15th, 2009 in Reader's Gallery
This Valentine's Day Box represents my latest project and my first post on here. The piece is made of Cherry and some extremely rare wood that a cabinet maker friend gave me. The sides are cut from one continuous piece of Cherry and the top piece is not veneered wood, it is simply some unknown species that I bookmatched and glued together. The bookmatching of this piece really makes the highly figured wood jump out. The splines are made of the same wood as the top panel, but they didn't come out as bright as I wanted, but I sill like the look of them overall.
The inside was my first attempt at making dividers which came out ok, and the velvet lining is wrapped around rubber foamies to give it that plush feel. The project was finished with 6 heavy coats of a rubbing varnish. Hope you enjoy and if anyone can identify this wood please let me know. Any and all feedback is welcome!

Thanks for the comments. I will lookup figured maple to see exactly how it compares.
