SWEET 16 HOPE CHEST
comments (1) January 28th, 2009 in Reader's Gallery
This hope chest measures 40x20x18 (od). Three sides of the box are made from one piece of Myrtle and the lid and base are of Padauk. I kept the design simple as I wanted the focus to be on the figure of the Myrtle, and not on design elements. The lid is a glue up of 4 boards and took me a day of trial and error to get a grain match I was happy with. Only the bottom of the chest inside is covered with cedar as I wanted the Myrtle grain exposed. The entire chest inside and out is finished with 4 coats of Howard's Feed n Wax, and the lid has been given an additional coat of Howard's hard wax. No stains or oils were used. This is my third hope chest for a granddaughter's 16th birthday. I have 15 more to make over the next 15 years. Comments or idea's would be appreciated.
