Thanks! In this case the wood (the end of a slab of Eucalyptus i bought from a fellow furniture maker in Arizona) came first. The big pipe is also from Arizona (found in the Hassayampa wash in Wickenburg), i knew it would be a base for something. I'd been thinking about using a steel post through it, a feller who was sharing the shop space i rent to renovate a sailboat gave me a broken spar or jib (a big dowel) and i saw it could be that post with a wedged flush through tenon. The rest fell into place.
