There’s something undeniably clean, modern and striking about this rocking horse design which is actually based on an antique German folk toy.
The maker of this rocking horse is Michael Willard of Willard Woodwrights in Bridgeton, MO.
“This horse is number 20 of 30 in a numbered, limited series known as the Old Paint Collection. Named for their vibrant colors, the result of laminating the solid hardwood blocks used in their creation, these sculptural toys combine a playful aspect with meticulous design…
…The Old Paint Collection horses are based on an antique German folk toy whose dignified and playful design was too striking to be allowed to fade from use. This design, while light enough to carry easily, is substantial enough to provide a truly satisfying ride for children two to six years old.”
Willard Woodwrights handcrafts these horses of of hardwood which is locally sourced whenever possible. Each rocker pair is bent by hand and fitted to an individual horse. Stainless steel fasteners are used to mount the seat and back and then each piece is finished with a non-toxic, hand rubbed penetrating oil.
This particular horse is made predominantly of air-dried cherry, from a beloved tree that grew in the Willard family backyard.
