Curly red, and white oak writing desk
comments (7) September 4th, 2011 in Reader's Gallery
This was one of the last projects at school. I like Arts and Crafts stlye furniture with tradional joinery accompanied with beautiful figured lumber. Being a lumber inspector for many years gave me an opportunity to collect some rare and spectacular figured lumber.
All joinery is mortise and tenon, through tenons, hand cut dovetails for the drawers. Every piece I do has a carving of a leaf for that particular species.

Yes this desk will sit in my office for a long time as I admire it everyday.
My plan was just a picture that I drew and as I build the project I add details here and there that interests me. Most of the design is in my head so not much down on paper.
I wanted to fume this piece to age the oak but with red oak the fuming process will turn the wood green. So I went through a task of water based stains, gel stains, shellac, with several coats poly.
