WILD CHERRY SLAB COFFEE TABLE No.2
This is my 3nd attempt at creating a modern slab coffee table. Wanting to create a piece that combined the American Craft design style with the look of Mid Century Modern, my two influences for this piece were the live-edge works by George Nakashima for the top, and George Nelson's 1948 "Platform Bench" for the base.
** The table's final dimensions are: 48"L x 24"W x 15"H.
** Finish is hand-rubbed oil & wax - 5 coats of natural tung oil wet sanded up to 1200-grit, followed by 2 coats of clear Liberon Black Bison paste wax.
The Wild Cherry slab for this piece was hand-picked out of a felled tree in Tennessee, and the Cherry for the base & Bolivian Rosewood for the 4 butterfly inlays came from a local hardwood supplier, here, in Houston.
Mortise/tenon joinery was used in building the table - no screws, bolts, or other hardware - I also completed the work using only traditional hand tools.
Thank you for your interest and for taking a closer look at my work. I'm constantly looking to improve as a woodworker, and would certainly welcome any comments or feedback you might have for me - on this piece or any one of my other gallery submissions here on FWW.
