The Allium Floor Lamp in Green

This lamp is made by laminating thin strips of ash in a bending form followed by careful hand shaping. It’s then dyed a dark emerald green and finished with a water based polyurethane. The open grain of the ash absorbs the stain beautifully and creates a multi-toned effect that is unachievable with paint.

Most of my designs begin as a general shape in my mind and as I develop the concept I start to think about color, texture and materials. I’m not certain if it’s because the shape of this lamp reminds me of a damigiana bottle, or I’ve been bombarded for too long by advertisements for The Green Hornet movie, but from the very beginning I’d imagined this piece as being a very dark green.

This lamp is 63” tall and 18” in diameter at the widest part of the base. Shown here with a natural linen lamp shade (19” diameter x 9.5” tall)

I wrote a blog series that followed the development of this piece, from initial concept through completion, on my blog Rocket Age Lighting
