Woodworking Returns to Public Schools

We've all read or heard about woodworking courses being dropped due to school budget cuts. Here's some good news about a public school in Boston that has reintroduced woodworking to students, with the help of grants and North Bennet Street School.

davesretired writes: This is great to hear. We will be putting on our aecond annual woodworking show with the help of the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians and the Soboba Casino. They donate the facility,tables, the prize money ($5,000.00) and everything else we need to put on our show and contest. The show is called "Let The Chips Fly". We sold tables to woodworkers to display their work for sale and we also had a juried contest with the winner (Russ Felbeck) taking home $1,700.00 in prize money.All the proceeds $6,000.00 were donated to local High School woodworking shops. The quality of work and people involved in the show was great. We had four class of wood working. Turners, scrollsawers, furniture makers and carvers. The quality of work was fantastic. We also had a contest for the students. 4 first place ribbons were given out along with four $100.00 checks for the students. I am working on a way to provide scholarships for the students to Palomar College, so that they can participate in their great woodworking program. We recently facilitated getting a $3,500.00 Legacy machine donated to one of our high school woodworking shops. My friends and I have been asked to participate in a carving class with the students. We also do soap carving with the local elementary schools and the kids love it.
There are a lot of things we can do for our schools. Like I say "Not every student will go to college,so let us show them what else is out there."

My Father always used to say" There are those who stand idley by saying something should be done and there are those who do something about it."

I am so grateful for the help I receive from the Soboba People and the participation of the woodworking clubs in Southern California.

SouthernILWoodworker writes: That is great to see.The High School I went to just sold all their wood shop equipment and got rid of almost all their art and music teachers.Even though I graduated only 10 years ago it makes me ask if I could do it again without all those classes and teachers.
