I worked on the design of this piece a good bit, trying to keep it simple with some elegant subtlties: single pegs, pillowed leg tops in the top, gentle curves and tapers in the legs. I get a lot of joy out of the smaller more intimate pieces. Thanks for looking.

Instead of ripping a long enough piece and using that straight edge as the flat for the mortise, I needed to stack the leg outlines right up against one another. I used a 1/4 inch MDF template I had made, with a flat mortise edge, and traced, then band sawed, then used a hand plane the smooth and square the edge.

Then the side profile was done with curved taper and the front and back profiles were just a taper. Keep the band saw cut offs to use for assisting in the second band saw cuts for each leg.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

AZIM AZIM writes: I would be interested to hear how the legs were shaped. I am working on a pair of end tables and will be using similar curved/splayed legs. Seems the tricky cut is near the top when you need to keep the cut straight and square so the rails/aprons fit up tight
