Here is the wedged through-tenon.  The dark stain on the wedge is from a very large nail.

Mallet made of oak from a 200 year old dismantled barn.  Dimentions of the head are 6 1/2"x4"x3".  Handle is 7" long and secured with a wedged through-tenon.  Weight is approxomately 2 1/2 pounds.
