Check out this new video on an awesome program (Kids Making It) in Wilmington, NC to get at-risk kids off the streets and into the woodshop. Several years ago, woodworker and lawyer James Pierce started the year-round woodworking program dedicated to helping inner-city kids. The program teaches them a new craft, encourages them to stay in school, and gives them skills for use in college or the workplace.
The participants even build projects like turned pens, bowls, or custom furniture that they can sell in the program’s retail store.
Wow, that's quite a story for Mr. Pierce. Sounds like he quit his day job to work full time in service to the community. Any of you folks found opportunities to share your woodworking skills with people in the community? I know some woodworkers have taught in their kid's schools, build toys for tots, guitars for vets, etc.
