For several months I have been working on making the first box in Doug Stowe’s book ‘Basic Box Making’. I have learned a lot a long the way. For those who follow my blog, you know that there have been several challenges, for a neophyte such as myself, to overcome.  The photo of the spline cutting jig, for use on my router table, was the second jig I built in an attempt to finish the tiny box.  The first one I exploded.  If anyone is interested the tale of these boxes, just stop by the blog and look at the last couple of months worth of ramblings.  It was quite a strange trip indeed.

Last night I applied some Tung oil to this tiny box. It is one of 12 in the batch. I decided to create a batch of tiny boxes, because I reasoned that having to do each aspect of the build, multiple times, would be educational. It was! I learned a bunch. The bottoms fit better in the later boxes, I am improving at getting a good fit for the lid, and my spline cuts are now rock solid.

Woodworking is fun!

I like your little boxes.....but even more the blog entries.
I am a box builder, too...been at it for about four years. I was inspired by a trip to Hawaii, where I saw some great work in Koa wood at a little shop on Kauai.
I have built dozens of boxes of various woods and designs, but the ones I enjoy most are those that are special requests, like a koa box with a Monk Seal carving on the top.
I live in Winona, MN, and noticed that you are in Iowa; darn near neighbors.
