New Greenwood side chair

The greenwood chair represents an ancient tradition that uses the wood’s natural shrinking and swelling to keep the joinery tight. An important element in this tradition is wood selection. Red maple for the legs and slats and hickory for the rungs in adherence to tradition ensures the longest joint life. The maple has just the right combination of give and resilience to maintain a tight grip on the hickory rungs. Hickory is the best choice for rungs because its hardness resists racking stresses from daily use. Of course it needs to be stronger than most chairs as it is so comfortable it will be your favorite chair to sit in.
“I began my woodworking career with the greenwood chair over a quarter century ago. I am happy to bring this traditional way of chair-making back into my routine and apply all I have learned about designing for comfort.”
