Work Table

Small writing table. Primary wood: Cherry, Curly Maple; Secondary wood: Yellow Pine; tertiary wood: Purple Heart. Table is a rectilinear form with broad cove as an element below the top. Legs are a flaring taper, larger at each end and nearing a dimension of one inch at the center. Decorative flower drawer pull hand carved in Purple Heart was applied using epoxy compound on a toothed surface. Flower is slightly undercut which helps to create more gripping surface. Traditional construction techniques such as mortise and tenon joinery for the rails and legs, dovetail construction used in the drawer, and glue blocks to secure the drawer bottom to the drawer are used in this table. A finish combining linseed oil and spirit of turps. mixture was applied and allowed to dry, followed by a seed-lac topcoat and buffed to a semi-gloss with pumice.
