This optical illusion really grabs the eye and makes one look at the table more closely. It would be an eye stopper at a cocktail party in a penthouse overlooking the Thames. No doubt!

A bit more info about the design: I was reading about Islamic design and had a go at making my own. I came up with various attractive designs, but wanted something with a bit of "meaning" behind it. This design is made from pentagons and squares, and the petal shapes are as a result of this. I saw what looked like tree roots in the pattern and developed the design to represent the tree of life. It was tricky to decide where to frame it as the pattern spirals on infinitely. I wanted to show enough of the design to suggest that it continues beyond the table edge, as in Islamic designs, but not show too much that it would feel fatiguing.
I used various european veneers: brown oak, oak, ash, pear, holly, yew burr and walnut burr. I chose all european woods to give integrity of location to the design.
