Serpentine Bow Front Writing Desk

I built this desk a year ago right after my 16th Birthday. It is a Serpentine Bow Front writing desk make out of one slab of 14" x 9' x 10/4 Ribboned Sapele. Starting from the top is is a bookmatched piece. The ribboned figure is beautiful and it even has some other figure similar to curl popping up sporatically in it. The desk itself is contsructed with mortise and tenon joinery which is drawbored with oak pegs. The legs taper gracefully from 1 3/4" square down to just 7/8" at the very bottom. The front is a bent lamination out of solid Sapele. It was first bent into the Serpentine Form and then I used my bandsaw to cut out the drawer fronts and then reassembled the front apron. Since the drawer fronts were cut out of the front the grain flows through the front and the drawers match the curve perfectly. The drawers themselves were constructed with hand cut dovetails onto the curved surfaces. They were pretty challenging since the surface was curved but in the end I'm very happy with them. The drawer sides are northern white pine and create a beautiful contrast to the Sapele front. The brasses are solid brass from Horton Brasses and the desk is finished with a sprayed Sherwin Williams Lacquer. Sprayed out of my little Home Depot Gun ;).... In the end I am really satisfied with this project and love how it came out. I plan on doing another one in the near future whether it is for a customer or just for myself!
