Mesquite Pedestal Table with Chairs
comments (0) June 1st, 2010 in Reader's Gallery
This table and 6 chairs is made from 9/4 mesquite slabs of wood. The table weighs about 330lbs. The black areas are voids in the mesquite that are filled with a black dyed polyester resin. The mesquite stump turned out to be more labor intensive than first thought. I resorted to dental tools to clean up the root ball area for example. Also had to rid the stump of the powder post beetles and "mesquite" worms. The project took about 8 weeks to complete the table and about 4 weeks to complete the chairs. The chair backs incorporate Saguaro Ribs, the wood structure inside the Saguaro Cactus.
The finish is tung oil and the wood's natural reddish patina in this picture is after about a month old. It is much deeper and richer currently.
