Walnut Valet Box

This valet was made from a discarded and discolored piece of walnut I found in the bargain bin at my local lumber store. I used the light and dark variations in the wood to create this unique piece.
This valet has a raised panel lid that shows off the color contrast in the walnut very nicely. The hinges are shaped walnut dowels, and brass washers are used as spacers to keep the lid fitting snugly. The lid lift is made of ebony with two walnut pins.
The interior bottom is covered with vinyl. I chose vinyl over leather because as a synthetic it is more humane. I designed this box so that the bottom liner can be easily removed and replaced if torn or worn.
I used Danish Oil as a finish, and then hand polished the exterior with wax for a natural, semi-gloss sheen that really allows the wood grain and colors to stand out!
The valet measures 3.5 inches high, 11 inches across the front, and 8.25 inches on the sides.
