Built over two consecutive winters, the bookcase and mantle replaced their quite ugly and utilitarian predecessors.  The bookcase conceals both a large screen TV, amplifier and DVD/VCR and also (within the soffit) a pull down screen for a projection video system.  The arch was built the following year to delineate the family room from the kitchen.  The arch also allows the cabling to the rear speakers and projector to be routed and concealed.
