Walnut Entryway Seat

This is a simple black walnut and maple entryway seat sized to fit in the available space. All solid wood construction except for the seat bottom, which is walnut veneer plywood. It will eventually be covered by a cushion the customer will make herself. Rails and legs are connected using 3/8” thick floating tenon joinery cut with the help of my new Mortise Pal. All the pieces in the stretcher assembly (1” wide x 5/8” thick pieces) are connected using 3/8” dowels. The dowel holes were cut using the Mortise Pal with the dowelling template. The maple end caps on the legs are 1/4” thick, cut from stock that had straight grain and glued so the grain runs diagonally (or towards the center of the seat if you wish) on all four corners. The ends caps were glued oversized, then trim to fit using hand tools. The maple bead detail under the rails were shaped using 1/3 of a triple bead bit. For safety reasons I routed the 1/4” diameter bead on oversized stock then ripped free the bead, then glued and nailed it to the rails after the seat had been assembled. Overall dimensions are 18” high x 22” wide x 14” deep. Finish is polymerized tung oil.
