Dining room wall unit built from birch veneer plywood and solid birch. The bottom section is a single cabinet with three compartments. The profile of the doors matches that of the kitchen cabinets (not seen). The doors were ordered on the web since I don’t have the equipment to mill this profile efficiently. The upper section is made of three identical units to ease transportation to the customer site. Separate side panels for the bottom and top sections were built oversize so they could be scribed to the wall for a perfect fit. The side panels for the bottom section are installed to give the appearance of inset doors while in reality they are overlay doors. Another advantage of this side panel method is that the outside face of the cabinets/shelf units are left unfinished, which means they cannot be damaged during transportation. I am not a big fan of the conventional toe kick configuration we see in kitchen cabinets so I used a half-round moulding to dress up the base a little and used a matching profile for the countertop. Customer selected the drop pulls herself and I must admit I really like them. All built, stained and top coated in the shop. The stain is a 2:1 ratio of Brown Walnut and Light Sheraton Mahogany aniline dye I got at Lee Valley. This was followed by two coats of Zinsser SealCoat, sanding with 400 grit then three coats of Mohawk pre-cat waterborne satin lacquer.

jedgberi jedgberi writes: Wow, you did a great job on this project. You made less expensive wood look really good. I am looking for a cheaper way to do built-ins for my office and I think I found the stain and finish technique I want to use for it.
