The Dust Deputy, which was reviewed in Fine Woodworking 207 is a surefire way to improve the performance of nearly any shop vac. The add-on cyclone traps most of the dirt that would otherwise stick to the filter. With less dirt getting to the filter, the vac is more efficient and can go longer between cleanings.

The only drawback is the rather tippy, sidecar-like appendage you now have to carry around with your vac. Some woodworkers and trades people have devised clever shopmade carts and other strategies to carry the rig, but the Festool setup is the slickest I've seen. You can order it here. If you have another brand of vac and you don't have time to make your own cart, you can get ready-made Oneida carts and other accessories here.

saschafer saschafer writes: Yes, I can confirm that the Festool antistatic hoses fit the Dust Deputy port. It's a friction fit on the INSIDE of the Festool hose end (the Festool hose seats on the outside when plugged into the vac). The Dust Deputy is made of a slick polypropylene, so the hose tends to eventually work itself loose over time.

Aroonstock Aroonstock writes: Do the Festool hoses fit the dust deputy? The hoses in the photo don't seem to be Festool.
