Both the seat and backrest are made of bookmatched, figured cherry.  All components are cut from the same plank.
All joints in the chair base are fitted, screwed, glued, and sculpted to yield both rounded and curved surfaces.
Legs are joined into the seat, fastened with screws and glue, then sculpted to appear as if they grow out of the seat.
The curved and slightly-tapered back support is dovetailed snugly into the seat, secured with screws and glue, and shaped to flow into the rear underside of the seat.
Sculpted folds lend a lighter touch to a very solid fitted, screwed, and glued joint between the seat and rear legs.

Proportioned for a child, this chair was made to go with a drop-front desk posted elsewhere in this gallery.  Both the desk and chair were gifts to my then 5-year-old granddaughter.  Built for comfort and durability, the chair has a dowel-mounted, self-adjusting backrest. Since it was constructed to complement a desk made for a child's artwork and supplies, the chair is also sculpted for aesthetic appeal.  The influence of Sam Maloof, and a touch of Tage Frid, evident in the design and details, is gratefully acknowledged. Like both the desk and the child, the chair is aging beautifully. Cherry. Oil finish.
