While building this project i decided to make two plant stands.  One in Cherry for myself and the other in White Oak that i gave to my parents for a holiday gift.  I cut a piece of slate for each to fit into the top where the plant will rest as to protect the wood from moisture.  I was pleasantly pleased with how easy the slate was to cut considering that it was stone. Each was finished with an oil finish.
