In Woodworking Circles and Beyond, Sam Maloof Still Draws a Crowd

Nearly six months after his death, Sam Maloof will be among the most prominent headliners at one of the country's largest annual craft expositions. The International Exposition of Sculpture Objects & Functional Art (SOFA) in Chicago is a venue for international art dealers and galleries to showcase the artists they represent.
This year's show will open with a dinner in Maloof's honor. The show, Nov. 6-8 on Chicago's Navy Pier, will also feature a special exhibit of Maloof's work and no fewer than three lectures and panel discussions about his achievements and influence. Among those scheduled to take part in the discussions are studio furniture makers Gary Knox Bennett, Roseanne Somerson and Thomas Hucker.
Press materials for the event cite Maloof's role as "a leader of the California modern arts movement," whose furniture was marked by a "sweeping sculptural style" and "infused with elegant artistic vision."
