"I don't have a wristwatch and there's no clock in the woodshop. When it's dark outside, then I go home."

That's Long Beach, California furniture maker John Nyquist, describing his workday in an interview with the LA Times. It sounds like every woodworker's dream to me.

Nyquist, 72, has been designing and building handsome mid-century furniture for decades. A collection of his work - sought after by mid-century collectors - goes on auction in Los Angeles tomorrow (Sept. 29). 

The story in the Times includes a terrific photo gallery of Nyquist's work, his home and his shop. Have a look - it's nice stuff.

rguthier writes: I just saw this today after reading his story in the current woodworker west issue. John was my instructor for Chair Design and Construction at Cerritos College back in 1998. He is one of a kind a great teacher, amazing furniture maker, and an even better story teller which make the other two all the better.
