This table is inspired by Darrel Peart at furnituremaker.com. His book Greene & Greene elements of design is wonderful. Full of detailed instructions.
The inlay detail on the lower shelf mimics a standard arts and crafts detail of 4 corner squares and 4 inner lines that come close but do not touch the squares. The inner lines I cut with my Woodrat which allowed me to stop and start the cut pretty much any where I wanted. Im not sure how you would do it, as cleanly, without one.
The smaller ebony plugs are 3/16 sq. The mortises for these are smaller than any hollow chisel and had to be cut by hand. Very tedious.

Arts and crafts table with Greene & Greene design elements. Very fun to make. The inlay on the lower shelf is actually about 1/16" proud of the surface giving an interesting shadow.
