Laguna's new 3hp cyclone promises 2000 cfm, enough for it to be the center of a rigid-ducted dust-collection system in most shops. The small motor atop the cartridge filter is an automatic filter shaker.

A single handle releases the drum under the cyclone, which collects most of the dust and needs the most frequent emptying.

A remote control is standard, making it easy to turn on the collector from enywhere in the shop.

With wood dust recently labeled a carcinogen, a lot of woodworkers are doing their research and realizing that they can't beat a rigid-ducted system connected to every dust devil in the shop. Most also realize that a ducted system needs a serious dust collector driving it, and you can't beat a cyclone for power, convenience, and filtration. That's because a cyclone separates out the heavy dust and chips before it gets to the impellor and the fine filter, and because cyclones use cartridge filters to capture the most dangerous dust without clogging. 

Laguna went to school on the leading small-shop cyclones, and added a few nice features to their new cyclone line, such as a filter shaker that de-clogs the cartridge filter each time the cyclone is shut off, a quick-release collection barrel under the cyclone, and a remote control. Company president Torben Helshoj said that the 3hp model ($1,995, 2000 cfm) is greatly outselling the 2hp version ($1,795, 1200 cfm) because of the obvious power-to-price value.
